VOYAGE LA INTERVIEW

FLOWER PEOPLE LA

We’d love to hear how you got started?

I was inspired by my mom, a Taiwanese immigrant, who opened her floral shop in San Jose in 2010. She enticed me with free coffee at the flower markets in the early mornings, but when we arrived, I fell in love with the world of beautiful flowers, living greens, and the creative energy. In her shop, I helped create arrangements for clients and for weddings.

Fast forward to 2013, after I graduated from UCLA, I began freelancing for different high end companies in LA. I worked with amazing creatives including Kate Holt for Amazon’s MARS event and Raquel Corvino for Louis Vuitton, Elle Women in Fashion, LACMA, Gucci x Chateau Marmont

Inspired by all of my talented floral friends, I began to experiment with my own creative spirit, constantly reinventing myself. The fun part - being able to create different characters for different events-  whimsical & ethereal in a day dream, or wild and breaking all the rules. My friends and clients began booking me for their weddings and word spread. I donated floral arrangements to charity events, where people viewed my work and booked me for art fairs and exhibitions.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

As a designer, I focused mainly on creating cool arrangements. But now as the owner, I’m in charge of every fine detail down to the final touches. I’ve gained so much more respect for business owners and I appreciate the challenges that have in turn made me more creatively resourceful. Oftentimes I am working with a low budget and have to generate something truly stunning yet cost effective. I’ve recycled pieces and turned them into art. I grow my own select greenery, succulents, and florals instead of driving to the flower market to be more eco conscious… all of this has led me to where I am today without the struggles along the way.

Please tell us about Flower People LA.

From dream weddings to luxury events, art installations, home decor... I’m a treasure hunter; I love discovering rare, exotic flora, architectural shapes, and strange colorful greenery whilE traveling. I’m inspired by sunset color palettes and shapes of coral reefs, the red sands and tropics of Hawaii

My work is an expression of freedom. When I’m creating an art piece, I’m in this flow, completely present, and the dreamiest creations just come to life. I don’t ever know how it will turn out until I’m satisfied. I’m constantly innovating, pairing the unexpected, pushing boundaries, and tinting vivid colors together. I love for my pieces to serve as reminders of the present moment.
